Assalamu Alaikum Dear Parents and Caregivers
We aim to provide consistent and quality career guidance to our students form Years 7-12. This is accomplished through a variety of activities organised throughout the year for the students. While most of these activities focus on Year 12 cohort as they are the level closest to finalising a choice in careers and a university degree; however, efforts are made to orientate students from year 7-10 as well. As a result, we have a group of very well-informed students who not only know about key factors to consider when deciding upon a career choice, but also know about the kind of study and work different careers involve.
Some of the activities undertaken by the students in this regard during term 2 are as follows:
River Journey Sessions with Flinders University
The students from Years 8, 10 and 11 engaged in River Journey sessions with Flinders University. These sessions aim to encourage students to explore and map their education and career futures using the metaphor of a winding river, recognising that life journeys do not always progress in a straight line. Students learnt to consider the benefit of higher education in achieving their career objectives and life goals.
Year 11 Career Sessions with Flinders University representative:
During week 1 of term 2, students had the opportunity of consulting individually with a Flinders University representative. Working from a student profile and personal questioning and information session, students worked through what courses and careers they are most interested in. The feedback from the students validated the importance of this session which students found extremely useful as they got personalised information and feedback. A replication of this session with a representative from Adelaide University is due to take place in week 9 of this term.
Year 10 and 11 Career Sessions with Adelaide University Representative:
Year 10 and 11 are of key importance in guiding students towards better understanding and refinement of career choices. For this reason, a session was organised specifically for these Year levels with a representative from Adelaide University. This was a workshop style activity wherein students worked from their personal strengths and interests towards learning about the careers most likely to be in demand in the next 5-10 years. Based on up-to-date statistics and information about upcoming careers, this session opened students’ minds towards the importance of market demand in job choice as well as the significance of staying abreast with the latest developments in the job market.
Flash Mentoring Sessions for Years 7-11
These sessions were stage 2 of the River Journey programme being run in collaboration with Flinders University. We had about 12 student ambassadors from different fields of study at university come to our school and engage with the students from Years 7-12. This was a terrific experience for the students as they learnt about different disciplines in small groups, asked questions about the rigour and requirement of courses, pathways and job opportunities. The swapping of university ambassadors in different groups meant that all students heard from a variety of disciplines including Medicine, Health, Nutrition, Engineering, Law, Exercise Physiology, Political Science, Environment Sustainability, Psychology. It was a treat to watch our inquisitive students engrossed in conversation and enquiring actively about the courses.
Apart from these, we have been keeping students up-to-date with any further career related information that comes our way. The students have also been visiting me regularly to ask questions and find out about university applications and SATAC guidelines. I hope these endeavours pave the path to brilliant careers for our students.
