Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members
Throughout the history of the Australian Islamic College, we have always placed a high priority on the education of our students to ensure their success, as well as adhering to Islamic values.
As we approach the end of term 3 2022, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to all year 12 students as they approach the end of the school year. I wish them the very best with their upcoming exams and all their future endeavours. The College’s achievements would not be possible without the support and dedication of our teachers, and I therefore extend my thanks to all our staff.
The year has not passed without challenges, but with Allah’s (SWT) grace, our continued parental and community support, we have always been able to meet any challenges.
It is with immense pleasure that I share with you an update regarding the progress towards opening our two new campuses in Henley Brook and Forrestdale, which will be opening in 2024 In Sha’Allah. A ground-breaking ceremony was held on 24 August 2022 to commemorate the start of the construction of each new campus. This is a tremendous achievement attributable to the ongoing blessings of Allah (SWT), which is allowing us to not only expand but to continue to provide quality education to the Muslim children of Western Australia now and into the future.
May Allah (swt) the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, continue to provide, protect and guide us all. May our staff, students and their families have a happy term break. I look forward to seeing you all again in Term 4 In Sha’Allah.

Term 3 has been very busy in the Senior School.
- Term 3 is usually crucial for our Year 12 students as they are to finalise their assignments for submission while they start studying for end-year exams. We wish our Year 12 Students every success in shaa’a Allah.
- In week 6 the school presented to the parents of Years 10 & 11 Students an Information Session about SACE, VET & Career in the Senior School for 2023. It was great to have the opportunity to share with our parents and students the vital information regarding the options that are available for the students in the Senior School.
- The Year 12 Subject Award Assembly/Senior School Award Assembly will take place on Wednesday week 9/term 3.
We always look forward to learning of the high achievement of our Senior Students.

CURRENT FOCUS:
Our current focus is to achieve our goals like develop social skills enhancing children’s interactions, problems solving, negotiating and responding skills in a group/play situation, be able to listen to and respect each other’s feelings. Exploring and learning our core values like always be respectful and safe and determined to succeed.
Activities:
Literacy—Jolly phonics whole alphabet learnt—children identifying sounds, naming the letter, differentiating between upper case and lower case is in progress, capable of recognising letters in their names and practiced writing it. Several activities were conducted in the process of learning and revising these letters.
Numeracy—Oral Numbers 0-40 and writing 1-10, quantities, days of the week, months of the year (In progress), date—understanding the concept via sticker calendar, felt calendar and a digital calendar on smart board, Shapes recognition, construction, sorting, identifying, and colour recognition. Group games: what’s the time Mr wolf? Number rhymes and songs.
Safety: How to keep ourselves safe? Personal space-Concept and how to maintain it? Stranger danger and how to deal with it?
Sustainability: Use of resources sensibly, avoiding wastage eg: paper towel, electricity, serving birds with waste food, using drawing paper for both sides, cleaning our environment – not littering etc. (These activities are followed in routines and discussed through books and discussion at intentional teaching groups
IT: what is a computer? What is a laptop? Learning names of the parts of the laptop/ computer and how to use them

(We do not accept egg cartons or cartons of items with nuts, as we presently have some children with severe allergies and life-threatening conditions).

Reception
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Asslaam-U-Alaikum
Wow, what an impressive learning journey has about to end. In this article we are going to share snippets of our learning in areas of curriculum and different events Reception classes had attended during Term 3.
ENGLISH
In this area of curriculum students have been continuingly building up on their knowledge of letter sounds, segmenting and blending. Many of our students are showing excellent progress in reading and writing skills. We commend some of our students who have already reached the reading levels expected by the end of this year level, Keep up your excellent work, CHAMPS! Some students have put their writing to the test and using their words and sentence knowledge to express their ideas. Please see the sample of work from some of our students in photos. You might observe some students are using their phonic knowledge to write words. This is an important stage in writing development.
MATHEMATICS
In Mathematics, our focus was on using number knowledge to add or subtract from a group of things. We used hands on material and interactive games to consolidate this learning. On top of classroom learning we had an opportunity to participate in World of Maths Excursion. Students thoroughly enjoyed these hands-on activities and learned mathematical concepts in a fun way.
SCIENCE
We have explored the topic of Materials in Science. Students have been engaged and involved in observing what are different materials. We are very pleased to see that the students are regularly making connections with the environment around them by sharing their observations, discussing and asking questions. Reception “A” had grown Crystals to present their scientific findings in the Oliphant Science Competition. Alhamdullillah! Our class project has won a prize in SA’s largest science competition. In Term 4 representatives from our class will go to the award ceremony to receive the award.
HASS, ARTS, DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
Reception classes are consolidating their learning about self and family in this term in HASS. Students are regularly using painting, drawing, and pasting techniques to express their ideas in a meaningful way. In Digital Technologies, reception A students learnt how to log on to a computer. Students have also explored Word Document features such as fonts, size and colour.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Reception classes have been involved in learning tennis this term through School Sports Program for Physical Education. Students are looking forward to annual Sports Day because they have been practicing various skills for sports day as well. The second highlight of the term was our BOOK WEEK. Students participated in a number of learning activities around this event. Reception students have been involved in listening to the stories and writing or drawing about their favourite characters from books. Students even had a chance to dress up as their favourite character on a special book week assembly. Reception has also presented their favourite story, Dear Zoo, with a little twist.
We wish you a well-rested break, and Inshaa Allah we will see you all in Term 4.

Junior Primary and Primary SRC
Another prosperous term for student voice at AIC with our Student Council members continuing to build their leadership skills whilst engaging in service activities for the community.
Term 2 saw us plan our biggest events to help support those experiencing homelessness, with all proceeds being donated to the Hutt Street Centre. At the end of the term JP students enjoyed coming straight from bed in their warmest, snuggliest pyjamas, whilst UP students donned their comfiest casuals.
Term 3 saw the creation of our newly loved SRC snack packs and SRC stall. For a week-long event, students were offered an array of goodies including flower headbands, BFF jewellery, poppits, handballs and awesome stationery gear all set up at our SRC Stall in Miss Gilbert’s class. Kindy and Junior Primary students enjoyed over 160 pre-ordered snack packs which were relished in the sunshine to celebrate Eid whilst primary feasted on SRC spider drinks.
We are now working towards plans around Sports Day and spring gardening. Please enjoy the happy snaps whilst we get back to engaging student voice at AIC.

Year 1
Assalamu Alaikum Families,
Both Year 1 classes have been very lucky this term to have two Preservice teachers completing their final teaching practicum. The students in Year 1A have had Mrs. Kate Williams and Year 1B Miss Molly Coad who have provided the students with wonderful learning opportunities. We wish both educators all the best in their future teaching endeavors.
This term the students have been provided with many hands-on learning opportunities when learning about measurement and capacity. The Year 1s had great fun measuring using informal units such as cubes and then extending this learning to centimetres and metres with tape measures and rulers. We have also integrated this into literacy by reading many picture books where measurement is part of everyday life.
In English, we have continued with Jolly Grammar, where students are introduced to basic grammar rules, punctuation and terminology such as nouns and verbs just to name a few!
We thoroughly enjoyed our Book Week Celebrations and had fun wearing our favourite book character’s costume and reading many stories. This also helped us when looking at the narrative writing structure which was our genre focus for this term. Students even created their very first narrative and published their own stories.
This term in HASS we are learning about games and toys in the past and we were lucky enough to go on an excursion to the Tea Tree Gully Heritage Museum to play some of these games in real life!
For Health this term, students have been focusing on safety. We have looked at e-safety and the importance of being safe online. Students created posters that highlighted various online safety rules. We have learnt about early warning signs and have thought about what our bodies do when they start to feel unsafe. Students drew pictures of themselves and labelled their bodies to show the early warning signs their bodies make when they start to feel unsafe such as hearts beating fast, butterflies in the tummy and sweaty hands.
For Physical Education this term, students have been participating in team building and playground games. Some of the games that students have engaged in include: ‘Fun Treasure Hunt’, ‘Under the Bridge’, ‘It Takes Two’, ‘Hoop Racers’ and ‘Woopty Hoop’. It was fantastic to see the teamwork and collaboration between the students during our lessons. The students have thoroughly enjoyed building gross motor skills via this term’s tennis program.
For Islamic Studies this term, our focus has been on understanding the five pillars of Islam and the six pillars of faith. To show their understanding of the third pillar of Islam which is Zakah (charity), students worked in groups and discussed images of people living in poverty and recorded what they could do to help the people by giving Zakah. Students enjoyed completing an Islamic artwork by using strips of paper with the colours black, yellow and red to fill in a template of the Ka’bah to represent the fifth pillar of Islam which is Hajj (pilgrimage). Students showed their understanding of the fourth pillar of Islam which is Sawm (fasting) by answering questions such as what is fasting, when do Muslims fast and why is it important for Muslims to fast?
In The Arts, we have been building upon the artwork portfolio, which will be taken home at the end of the year Insha’Allah. As a way of combining HASS and Art, students also designed their own commonwealth games mascot by selecting an Australian animal of their choice to illustrate and represent in their own way. For their animal mascot, students needed to write a short story to describe their animal and explain why they chose their animal to be their mascot.

Dear Parents and Caregivers
Since our last newsletter, the year 2B have been busy learning about the biological sciences of animals and plants. Therefore, we went to Adelaide Zoo to explore this topic in further detail through real-life scenarios.
In literacy, students have worked on writing narrative texts based on fairy books. Students had 45 minutes to write the narrative text and then create a story on PowerPoint. The students were all very excited when we had our first printed fairy story full of beautiful pictures on each slide.

Year 3A
Assalaam Alaikum to All
Dear Parents,
Term 3 was a rather jam packed albeit fun term filled with learning, laughter, and lots of achievements. Thank you to all parents for assisting the students in their daily reading treks, as there has certainly been an improvement in reading skills.
For English this term we focused on reading, writing, spelling, and grammar. Within these sections we made a start towards the 7 seven steps of writing, we have been practicing spelling daily and incorporating storytelling and writing within our days.
In Design and Tech, we have embarked on a STEM project titled ‘just chilling’ where students have researched, every week, ways in which to create a water cooler made entirely from recyclable and repurposed materials. Although challenging at first, once they got the hang of it, they have done excellent work within their groups and have shown great skill and determination in completing little tasks in preparation for the final product.
Climate, weather, and Australia’s neighboring countries have been our exploration points for HASS this term, the students have enjoyed our weekly quizzes post topic matter.
PE was rather exciting as we focused on dodgeball and soccer this term, with the technical skills for passing, scoring, and overhead throwing, which was loved by all. Healthy eating was our focus for Health in term 3 and students were keen to follow their eating habits with the food log journal that they completed. We were able to discuss what is healthy, how to read and understand food labels, and what the effect of healthy foods has on our bodies and minds.
In Math, we revised addition and subtraction strategies from term 2 which once refined, we then moved to multiplication and learning and understanding how money works in this instance. We also went through division and how this ties up with all other strategies learnt thus far. Students were confident and enjoyed their multiplication the most. It was wonderful to see students encourage each other and peer work by themselves during activity time.
In Science, we learnt all about heat, its conductors, insulators, and our main sources of heat as well. Lastly, in art this term we learnt many new things, one being cubism by Picasso. It was amazing to see students create their own pieces of artwork! We also incorporated drama whereby students explored the ideas and narrative structures through role play and by using a variety of mediums such as voice, props, and even by relating to the audience.
Year 3B
Assalamu Alaikum Parents/Guardians,
Term 3 has been very productive for the Year 3B students. They have been working diligently in all areas of the curriculum taking feedback on board to improve their individual academic and social goals.
In English this term students focused on persuasive writing and creating well-structured paragraphs. Students enjoyed forming their for and against arguments for various topics and participated collaboratively in group work. Students showed a lot of interest when learning about prefixes and suffixes, finding it very interesting how words change the meaning depending on the prefix or suffix added.
In our Maths lessons students learnt to represent and solve problems involving multiplication using efficient mental and written strategies and are steadily improving and excelling in recalling multiplication and related division facts. Students found the topic of fractions stimulating and enjoyed completing hands on activities based on this topic.
In our Science lessons, we have been learning about heat. Students explored how heat can be produced via friction, electricity and burning. We explored how heat moves through discussing three types of transfer- conduction, convection and radiation. Students enjoyed researching different types of materials that make excellent heat insulators. Students applied their knowledge about what heat is, how it transfers, properties of heat conduction and insulation to create a STEM project design and conduct an experiment. The STEM project asked students to design and make something to put on the water bottle to keep it cool, using recycled or repurposed materials. Once their designs were completed, students led the experiment by measuring the temperature of the water at various times during the day. As a final task, students were asked to create a persuasive advertising poster to convince the class to buy their product, explaining the various materials used in their design and why their bottle holder is the best. Although an individual project, it was great to see the collaboration between students and hear the positive conversations about their inventions. This STEM project was a fantastic way to finish our lessons on physical sciences.
This term we also went to Adelaide Zoo for an excursion. Students took part in an educator led interactive lesson learning about animal life cycles and their habitats.
In our art lessons students focused on Drama. We learnt about the elements of drama such as body movement, tone of voice, symbols, facial expressions and many more, to explore, shape and perform dramatic actions and scripted drama in the form of reader’s theatre. Students enjoyed exploring and inferencing mime drama that had close links to our English lessons. In our PE and Health lessons we focused on various skills practicing for our Sports Day and enjoyed learning about healthier eating by examining food labels and ingredients list. Students explored healthier snack and lunch versions.
This term the Quran competition winners’ ceremony took place. Congratulations to Zunairah Zartaj (1st place in Level 2) and Talha Tamoor (2nd place in Level 2) for their outstanding efforts, persistence and hard work.
I wish all the students, parents and care givers relaxing and safe term holidays. Inshallah the students come back reenergized and enthusiastic for our last term of the school year.
Year 4
Year 4A
Assalamu Alaikum Parents/Guardians
Term 3 has been an exceptional productive term for 4A students. They have been working really hard, listening to positive criticism and most importantly, taking the advice and acting on it to set their academic goals consistently.
Using Seven Steps, students focused on various techniques to write introduction, facts and ending for informative writing. Knowledge and skills taught in both grammar and spelling were transferred into their overall writing through editing and proofreading. This is an area we will be investing a lot of our time in to help students understand how to submit a final piece of writing.
In Maths, students mainly focused on multiplication and division problems including multi-step problems related to word problems. Students learned different strategies related to multiplying three-digit numbers by two-digits, multiplying two-digits by two-digits as well as multiplying numbers by ten, hundred and thousand. Division is related to multiplication and students had to use concepts related to grouping and arrays to understand this. Short division with and without remainders were introduced and practiced along with division word problems.
Students gained a lot of hands-on experience on how to sort natural and processed materials in practical life via recycling and designed compost bins to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of biodegradable materials. They learned about the importance of using appropriate materials to reduce ocean pollution and were introduced to the concept of sustainability.
Students investigated rules and laws as well as the difference between equality and equity. From this, they implemented equity in activities (such as in making board games). Furthermore, some students used these learnings in Health.
Students continued to focus on the book from last term in Arts and this time role played scenes to complete comprehension booklets related to how Kunkush was lost and reunited with his family.
For Design and Technology this term, students had to work towards successfully utilizing Microsoft Word. To complete the tasks; students needed to answer a set of questions and instructions. In the recipe task, students represented these using Microsoft Word. All students worked well to become more efficient with Word.
This term in Health, students continued to develop their knowledge and understanding about law systems in Australia. In particular, the three levels of Australian parliament and the ‘Lore’ for Indigenous Australians. Further, the class discussed school, community and home rules and responsibilities too. In one activity, students designed a story about a law or rule. During this task, and another on drawing and advertising a new local place in the community, students developed good communication and teamwork. There were some excellent ideas, and it was exciting because students worked well.
For Physical Education, students participate in Basketball and practised dribbling, shooting, passing and techniques such as positioning and sliding. Most students enjoyed these activities and practised these techniques in a real game for assessment.
Term 3 was action packed with Book Week, Sports Day, Numeracy Week and Science Week where students had a chance to participate in teams and experience teamwork to solve problems or find solutions through critical analysis and in-depth research on a given topic to achieve learning outcomes via these exciting events.
Year 4B

Term 3 has certainly been dynamic as we continue to focus on applying the 4 AIC Core Values and students achieving their personal best.
In celebration of Literacy Week, we had the Book Fair and the Book Week Assembly which all the students thoroughly enjoyed. The students will also be involved in an event for Numeracy Week with further details to come shortly.
In English, an emphasis on developing the students’ inferencing skills in comprehension has been
critical in facilitating their growth as independent and self-monitoring readers. Parents have an important role to play in helping their children become better readers and to enjoy reading. By sharing books with your children, you are their first teacher.
The students are also building their writing of information reports using the Seven Steps to Writing Success. Our emphasis is trying to promote creative thinking and encouraging the students to deconstruct and create exciting informative texts.
In Mathematics, we have continued to focus on Number with an emphasis on developing the students understanding of multiplication facts and strategies. The students have expanded their repertoire of strategies and our attention will move to division in the coming weeks.
Over the term, students have been developing their Word and PowerPoint skills. Students enjoyed using the different applications on Word and PowerPoint and now can add some creative flare to their work.
They have continued to explore the importance of Waste Management and Biodegradable Materials. We focused on how we can create compost and what materials should and should not be used. We also covered what pollution is and the impact it has on the environment.
In HASS, we have been learning about Rules, Laws and Local Government. Students have been exploring rules, laws, and their effect on us. They have examined the difference between a rule and a law. Students also investigated the concepts of equal and equitable, and if equal means fair.
It is imperative that you continue to monitor your child’s homework. For your child to be successful, set a homework schedule that fits in with each week’s activities.
We encourage all parents to ensure their child has all the required stationery as some students still do not have the necessary items to support their learning. Also, do not forget to regularly monitor our Class Dojo as this forms part of our parent communication.
We wish you all a restful break, and look forward to the students returning for the exciting learning we have planned in Term 4.
Year 5
5A – Ms Sutton
Literacy has been a huge focus in our classroom this term. We have had two major evets that our class has organised and run. The first was the Scholastic Book Fair. As part of this process our students had to apply for jobs. The three jobs available were cashier, shop assistance and covid officer/security. Students filled out a job application as part of this process. As a class, we created a roster and students had to get themselves to work on time and work. This was a great ‘real life’ experience for all, and gave our students a taste of what retail work is like.
Our next event was the Book Week Parade. Our students auditioned for various roles and then worked together to write the script to run the event. I was very impressed by their editing process as once they did a first run through, they decided to add some humor and slight banter into the script which was warmly received by the audience. The publicity for both these events, involved the whole class and was done by an assembly mini performance, posters around the school and writing a letter to our school families. Our photographer was also one of our students and with minimal training, she did a great job (see photos below).
Math’s has had some very successful results this term. We have been teaching in 3 lesson blocks and the continuity is benefitting all. We have had an 100% pass rate for our last 4 assessments on decimals. Well done to all our students.

5A- Mrs Allocca
Science/ Technology
This term in Science students have been keen to investigate and learn more about our Solar System. They are able to name each of the planets and name the four terrestrial or Jovian planets. To further develop student’s knowledge and understanding we constructed a 3D solar system in our Technology lessons.
HASS
In HASS, the students have been learning about the importance of values and processes to Australia’s democracy and describing the roles of different people in Australia’s legal system. Students were given the opportunity to role play an election.
Year 6

Year 6A
ENGLISH
The year 6 students have been learning how to write historical recounts. They have examined historical recounts on important events in history, such as the sinking of the Titanic, Gallipoli and the invention of the telegraph and morse code. We have enjoyed reading our class novel together, ‘The Mostly True Story of Jack,’ during our comprehension lessons
PE and HEALTH
This term students have been learning about Basketball, and have enjoyed learning about the different skills and strategies that can be used in a game of basketball. In Health they have learnt about drug and alcohol awareness.
MATHS
Students have learnt about perimeter, area, discounts, operations with money, packing and stacking and timetables.
THE ARTS – VISUAL ARTS
Students have created a range of drawings and designs to help them create self-portraits, graduation caps and memory wheels of their memories from Primary school.
SCIENCE
We have been learning about Earth and Space Sciences, and how sudden geological changes can affect the Earth’s surface. 6A have learnt about the Earth’s surface, tectonic plates and natural disasters.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
The students have been learning about Robotics, using Spike Prime Kits. They have learnt about a variety of life hacks, and have created break dancers, ways to display wind speed, displaying a weather forecast, and have been able to create Leo the personal trainer.
HASS
Students have been learning about Business and Economics in HASS. They have learnt why choices about the allocation of resources involve trade-offs, why it is important to be informed when making consumer and financial decisions and have been able to recognise the different ways that business choose to provide goods and services.
Year 6B
Book Week
Term 3 would be the most exciting Term of the Year with Book Week activities the highlight!Year 6B have been fortunate to have Mr Perotta taking the class on Wednesday and has taken the Technologies, Science, PE and Health. Please read his report below.
Robotics
The Year 6’s worked on Lego Robotics this term. Students had group tasks that included using cloud data and digital technology. To show their work, students answered questions on weekly tasks and most completed extension tasks set. Most students were surprised when their designs moved due to them programming cloud data. All showed an interest in the hands-on tasks, with some excelling unexpectedly.
Science
In Science, students discussed answers to questions on Hydrological, Meteorological, Geological and other Natural Disasters. There were some great questions asked in class and student engagement. Two experiments focused on earthquake and flood simulations. During these experiments, students developed understanding on the elements of a Scientific report.
Health
Health included Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking education. In the Smoking unit, students completed advertisements that were similar to real-life advertisements by including statements, graphics, an information message, and explanation message. Everyone passed, with some excellent advertisements and original designs. The next assessment looks at internet/physical campaigns.
PE
In P.E., students focused on Basketball drills. These drills included passing, dribbling, and positioning, which everyone had to improve on. In game practice, most showed participation and encouraged others too. Importantly, some students giving the drills some practice!
The class has been busy studying their novel The Mostly True Story of Jack which is full of intrigue and mystery. Some Art activities have been based on the novel. We are working on improving comprehension skills. The students are also developing skills in historical recount writing.
HASS
HASS lessons have taught the students about Financial Planning and decision making. We are planning on having a stall at the beginning of Term 4 to raise money for end of Year activities.
The Students have been undertaking a variety of activities about Measurement including perimeter, area, packing and stacking, timetables and timelines.

Primary School Literacy Coordinator
The Book Week Parade is the biggest event we have each year for Literacy. Leading up to this we also run the Scholastic Book Fair, in our library and the Premiers Reading Challenge. The Book Fair and Parade were both run by primary students with the support of their teachers. The theme this year was ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’, and this was certainly represented by the wonderful variety of creative costumes and performances by our Kindy, Reception, and year six classes. The teachers added to the excitement by performing their own version of ‘The Gingerbread Man’ with enthusiastic audience participation. The students did a great job of providing commentary and running the event and also taking the photo’s of the day.
Annual Quran & Azan Competition

The winners of the AIC Annual Quran and Azan Competition 2022 were announced in a marvellous ceremony in which the Hafidh of Allah’s book were honoured and appreciated for their hard work. Primary & High School Sports
In Term Three the Physical Education Department at AIC has had some exciting events and experienced a range of different sports. We have after school sports, competitive opportunities, elite programs, leadership opportunities, continuing programs and sports day planning.
Term Three at a glance:
- Successfully secured $3000 in Sporting Schools Grants
- Run Tennis for years R-2 and Volleyball for years 7&8 through the sporting schools’ program
- Run our second Football in Schools after school soccer program for years R-6
- Boys from years 6-12 participated in elite sports selection trials
- Selected Boys and Girls from years 9-12 attended sports leadership programs
- Years 6&7 participated in the Boys and Girls Bachar Houli Cups
- Continued preparations for Term Three Sports Day
Sporting Schools Funding
This term, the Junior Primary received tennis coaching sessions provided free of charge as part of the Sporting Schools Grant. We love watching students have new experiences and play new sports as part of this program.
In High School the year 7 and 8 students received volleyball coaching with their Sporting Schools funding. In high school only years 7 and 8 are eligible so they are lucky enough to benefit each term from having specialist coaches. It is always exciting to see the experiences we are able to offer benefitting the students and engaging them in sports they may not otherwise have tried.
Football in Schools
This year for the second time, we ran an after-school soccer program called Football in Schools. This is open to any student in R-6 and was very popular. Students were able to partake in an eight-week program designed to give them a taste of the sport. We love offering soccer programs for our students where there is already a high level of interest. We are looking forward to seeing some of our regular participants take their skills further at local clubs.
Bachar Houli Foundation Junior and Senior Academies
‘The Bachar Houli Academy (BHF) is a high-performance football talent program for emerging junior players. The program focuses on leadership, brotherhood identity and providing a unique football development opportunity’ (BHF website). The BHF ran their first South Australian Academies this year and AIC students were invited to participate.
Boys
The junior and senior boys attended an elite selection where they participated in a series of tests using specialist equipment similar to the AFL Draft Combine. These tests included a standing vertical jump, a 20m sprint, and an agility test. Once results were finalised, boys with strong results were invited to join the academy and be part of a three-day leadership program. We congratulate all boys who took part, and we know they all gained a considerable amount from the three days.
Girls
The girls’ program was selected very differently. They had to write a submission answering questions to support their entry. The answers they gave determined their acceptance into the academy. Three of our senior girls attended the three-day program and couldn’t speak highly enough of their experience. The female program is similar to the boys, in that it focusses on leadership and identity but also on health, fitness and the unique sisterhood shared amongst young Muslim girls. They came out with a stronger sense of self and impactful memories that will last for a long time.
Bachar Houli Cups
In its second year, the cup has grown to include 4 Islamic Schools across 2 zones, 4-year levels and a separate competition for male and female participants. The program has kick started a tremendous growth in multicultural footy with the Bachar Houli Foundation now also running local academies for our middle and senior students and several students seeking out local clubs to continue their passion.
This year we took year 6 and 7 students, some who had competed previously but many who were participating in their first AFL competition. Three teams went to each of the girls and boys cups, competing in two separate divisions, year 5/6 and year 7/8.
Many of our students look forward to this competition every year as the highlight of our competitive calendar. We love the connection we share with the other colleges and the growing sense of community this is building. It is such a fun friendly atmosphere, and we are grateful to be a part of it.
Congratulations also to Nour Zreika, who last term designed the football used in the cup and gifted to schools at the conclusion of the event. It was wonderful to see her design being used throughout the day.

Intercultural Cup
At the end of Term 2 our senior students took part in the Port Power Intercultural Cup. The Power Intercultural Program is designed to celebrate cultural diversity, promote inclusion, and build social cohesion by recognising the positive contribution of different cultures within Australia.
This is the sixth year the program has run, each year concluding with a 9 a side AFL Carnival. The boys and girls teams performed strongly at the Carnival, the girls finishing third overall and the boys made it to the grand final. This was played at Adelaide Oval where our boys demonstrated exceptional teamwork and dominated the final game against respected competitors in Mount Carmel. At the end they came out comprehensive winners and champions by 66 points.

Religion Studies
Year 10 Religion Spiritualties, religion and meaning
As part of S, R & M students conducted a number of fundraising activities to raise funds for people struggling with homelessness. Students ran several activities in weeks 5 and 6, ranging from an online GoFundMe to a treasure hunt for Junior Primary, Sponge Your Teacher and a Sausage Sizzle. A big thank you to all the teachers who volunteered and supported the students in this event. The project raised approximately $3000, which will be sent to Human Appeal International, Hutt St Centre and Youth Off the Streets.
Year 11 Religion – Spiritualties, religion and meaning
The Year 11 students attended the Al- Khalil mosque to attend a seminar with Sheik Sulaimon to investigate the procedures and practices in Islam regarding death. Students researched the rituals surrounding death in one other Abrahamic religion and another religion of their choice. The experience was to assist students in learning the procedures of preparing a body for the Janazah, compare it to other religions, reflect and contemplate on the matter of death. Students also worked on their Connections task which required students to present a 10 minute presentation to the younger classes on one of the following topics. Taraweh, Eid Prayer & Khutbah. The purpose of this task was to propel students to understand the significance of the above practice and its promotion of community connections.
Year 12 Religion Studies
Students have been working on finalising their SACE assessments for final submissions. Currently students are working on their two source analysis tasks where they have written a comparison of the Human Rights Constitution established in 1946 and The Medina Constitution established in 1400.
Student are also finalising their Art in Religion task, looking at Islamic Art, Islamic calligraphy, prayer mat art, Aboriginal art, Christian art and the differences in Islamic art forms and other religious and spiritual art forms and how Islamic art prohibits the depictions of faces and life forms.

OLIPHANT SCIENCE AWARDS
In Term 1, I had invited students to nominate themselves to be part of South Australia’s largest state level science competition. Many students had showed their interest and registered themselves. I had received a number of excellent entries. Students’ projects were entered in this competition in the following categories:

- Crystal investigation

A ceremony will be held in earlier Term 4 where our winners will be receiving their certificates. You have more time to start thinking about projects now. I would love to see budding scientist of AIC to shine on bigger stage in 2023.
SCIENCE SHOW
Preceding to Oliphant Science Competition Junior Primary and Upper Primary students had attended the Silly Scientist Show. At the end of the Term 2, an excursion has been organised to encourage students to experience how science works in their surroundings. Our Junior Primary and Upper Primary students had an opportunity to explore the scientific concepts such as motion, sound, heat, and light. Students had learned these concepts through interesting hands-on experiments such as guitar’s story, optical illusion, stomp rocket, water bag and pencil, and lightening ball. For the big finale Science show presenters took us outside to show us coke & Mentos experiment.

Students have been working diligently this term in HASS, English and Islamic mashaAllah!
In HASS, the Year 7s have been exploring the key features of Australia’s system of government and explores how this system aims to protect all Australians. Students have been examining the Australian Constitution and how its features, principles and values shape Australia’s democracy.
In Islamic Studies, in the middle school we have been analysing the three categories of Tawheed; Tawheed Al-Ruboobyah, Asma Was Sifaat and Uloohiyah. Students have written excellent reports of the three categories with the Year 9s also analysing major and minor Shirks.
In English, the Year 9s have been creating their own children’s book where they discuss a current issue. They will be reading their stories to the Kindergarten students at the end of the Term which they are very excited about.

Year 7 students took a term to research, plan and complete some complex design/artwork. They drew inspiration from various design styles including, arabesque, filigree and other. The purpose behind this project is not to create beautiful artwork but also to give students opportunities to practise paying attention to detail, focus, patience and time management.

Year 9: Civics and Citizenship
This term, the Year 9 students were introduced to the concept of Civics and Citizenship. They learned about how a government is formed. They gained an understanding of the Australian Political Parties and their goals. Finally, students learned the key features of Australian Court System and how courts apply, interpret the laws and resolve disputes
Year 10: Civics and Citizenship
This term, the Year 10 students were introduced to the concept of Civics and Citizenship. They developed understanding of the key features and values of Australia’s system of government compared with at least one other system of government in the Asian region. They gained knowledge of separation of power, systems of checks and balances. They learned the importance of the High Court and the interpretation of the Constitution and International Law. They learned the various High Court cases, its interpretations and its impacts on our daily lives today.

Assalamu alaikum,
We’ve had some exciting events happening in Science this term for our high school students. As part of year 10 Biology, students attended an excursion to Flinders University for the interactive ‘Science of Flavour’ workshop. Students learnt about how we experience flavour through a combination of senses, internal body structure, genes as well as past experiences. Students were also given the opportunity to conduct some basic scientific tests which allowed them to explore how they experience flavour on a personal level. Students became more acquainted with tastes they like and dislike and the science behind this. For example, how some people find coriander to be tasty while others find it tastes like soap. This is all due to a particular gene. Very interesting!
Students thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity, and we look forward to having more of these beneficial educational experiences in the near future!

The Year 8 EALD Class has been studying the Terror Genre and learnt about rising tension, settings, wicked characters, unusual and shocking events etc.
