Newsletter 2022 – Term 2

Executive Principal’s Message

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Dear Parent/Guardian and Community Members

Providing quality education, which is full of Islamic manners and values, is indeed a real challenge with current global pandemic. I ask Allah (SWT) to help us all accomplish the objectives we have set for AIC. I am sure that with the grace of Allah (SWT), parental support, and the help of the community we will Insha’Allah be able to face the challenges and will achieve our goals.

I shall continue to work with you for the best interests of our beloved children and our community at large.

Our primary goal is to ensure a real Islamic environment for each child, which is safe and conducive to his/her academic and character development. This can only be achieved if policies and rules are properly enforced, and the students and the parents wholeheartedly adhere to the policies and procedures. We hope you will communicate with your child and his or her teacher about study habits and homework and ensure that your child arrives at school ready to learn every day.

Australian Islamic College on behalf of Human Appeal, took part in fundraising campaigns this term to raise funds for Somalia and Yemen in Ramadan and have raised around $30,489.26. Thank you to all our staff, students and their parents and community who contributed to these very worthy causes. May Allah (SWT) reward you all abundantly.

Make sure you look for AIC on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms for regular updates on all that is happening in and around our campuses.

Jazak’Allah Khairan for entrusting your child to us.  I can assure you, we are more than willing to do all that it takes to make sure our schools are outstanding institutions, where our students get both their souls and minds nurtured.  Such a mission is not possible without your continued full support and cooperation, and I look forward to working together now and into the future.

We call upon Allah (SWT) the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, to continue to provide, protect and guide us all and I wish our staff and students a happy term break.

Kind Regards

Abdullah Khan
Executive Principal

Principal’s Message

Assalamu Alaikum

We started term two with the celebration of Eid El-Fitr. I hope all our families and school community had a wonderful Eid and a blessed month of fasting. May Allah (swt) accept all our fasting and ibadah.

AIC, Adelaide is always on a journey to improve teaching and learning outcomes for students. Earlier in the term, a restructuring was undertaken to provide more support for students, teachers and the school community. As a result of this, two well-being teams have been created in both the High School and Primary School. The teams consist of the Heads of School, Co-ordinators and Imam/Pastoral care.

Please see below the staff members who would assist you in matters relating to curriculum and well-being:

  • Br. Mohamed Elsayed – Imam/Pastoral Care
  • Mrs. Hanan Dallah – Head of Senior School Year 10 – Year 12
  • Mr. Azeem Ali – Head of Middle School Year 7 – Year 9
  • Mrs. Tanya Khelwaty – Head of Upper Primary School Year 3 – Year 6
  • Mrs. Marissa Fernandez – Head of Lower Primary School Kindy- Year 2
  • Mrs. Benish Hussain – Literacy Coordinator Year 7 – Year 12

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Ms Penelope Donnas in the English Department and Miss Ayah Merhi in the Science Department in Middle School. Both teachers come with specialisation in their areas and will be a great addition to our dynamic team of teachers. A big thank you goes to Mr David Retallick and Ms Dosina Hasin for their contribution over the last few weeks in the Middle School. I wish them all the best.

In the Primary School we are looking forward to welcoming Ms Radhika Reddy in joining our school community. Additional staff members will be finalised soon as well.

Unfortunately, COVID continues to present significant challenges especially for staffing. We are still struggling to find the right numbers of relief teachers to cover our absent teachers at any given day. This is due to effect of COVID combined with an ongoing teacher shortage in SA and Australia wide. As a result, on occasion, some classes have been combined or split to ensure that teaching and learning continues unhindered. Given the pressures on staffing caused by the pandemic, our teachers continue to work tirelessly to support the learning of our students. I sincerely thank them for their efforts. I would also like to thank all the parents for their understanding during these challenging times.

Some of the highlights of this term were the Dux assembly celebrating our high achiever for 2021 cohort, the Quran & Adhan competition for Primary & High School (livestreamed on Facebook), Flash Mentoring sessions for Years 7-11, River Journey sessions for Years 7 to 10, breakfast club with students, JP-Animal Capers incursion, JP -Year 2-Zoo excursion (rescheduled due to weather).

For students who need further support with their work, I want to announce the resumption of the Homework club on Mondays and Fridays and the Art club every second Monday.

The students completed NAPLAN for years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and semester one exams for years 7 to 11 this term. I would like to thank all staff involved for their efforts in organisation and invigilation.

Our students continued to be high achievers in sport and were involved in AFLW (women’s) premiership cup visit, Auskick for Primary students, Futsal competition and Power Intercultural Carnival for High school students.

In line with the ethos of AIC, all our staff members believe that we should challenge and support our students to excel, offering a range of diverse pathways and opportunities for their learning. As learning happens in and beyond the classroom, with your help and support, we hope to provide our students with learning which is adaptable and effective for their ever changing environment.

Year 1

Assalamu Alaikum

News Telling

This semester the Year 1 students were encouraged to develop their news telling and Oral Language skills. The students presented by preparing their presentation on paper or a PowerPoint. The Oral skills included speaking clearly, using appropriate body language, using complete sentences, and showing confidence when speaking to the teacher and peers.

Thank you to parents who assisted their children by making them practice their talk at home before presenting at school. The children showed photos, drawings, or other relevant materials including PowerPoints to make their presentations more interesting.

Mathematics

The Year 1’s were thrilled to begin an exciting year exploring the amazing world of mathematics through hands-on learning, interactive activities, and engaging discussions. They learned to develop their Number Sense by using a variety of strategies to add and subtract within 20. The Year 1 students enhanced their understanding and knowledge of 2-digit place value and skip counting including 2D/3D shapes.

Science

The Year 1 students explored changes that occurred in the sky and weather patterns. This included identifying the different features of the sky and how they change on a daily, weekly, and with each new season.

English

This semester, the Year 1 students were encouraged to use strategies to improve and edit their writing to make it more interesting for the reader. They also focused on identifying and spelling digraphs within words.

Physical Education

This term, the Year 1’s were happy to welcome a group of coaches from the SANFL Multicultural Team. The coaches worked with the year 1 students in their different clinics and gave them a taste of what to expect in AUSKICK. Two of the coaches were specifically appointed to work with AIC Adelaide school off the back of the Bachar Houli Cup success.

Student Well Being

Year 1 students participate in Social & Emotional Awareness lessons. Social and Emotional Learning is about learning how to manage feelings, manage friendships and solve problems. We continue to focus on strategies that they can draw upon to combat any difficulties that they may experience. We will examine how making positive choices can build positive relationships with others.

Importance of Reading

We would like to impress the importance of regular reading at home. To gain fluency it is vital that children read every day. We ensure that students have a range of opportunities to read at school, in different group settings, and in different curriculum areas. However, it is still important for children to read aloud at home for 10 – 15 minutes each day. Reading aloud to an audience is different from reading silently to yourself because it requires clear articulation, fluency, comprehension, and expression.

Attendance

Thank you to the students and parents for the excellent attendance shown this semester. It has been a delight to see the students who are punctual to school by coming at 8:30 am. Regular attendance and punctuality are important for the continuity of our programs and for the student’s learning at school.

We look forward to diving into Term 3’s learning with our students. We encourage parents to speak to us if they have any queries about their child at school. Please make an appointment at the front office.

Year 2

Assalam Alaikum

I hope your Eid celebrations were fulfilling and joyous. This year’s Eid happened at the beginning of Term 2. Since Ramadan began at the end of Term 1, we started making our classroom decorations then and finished them after the holidays. The children really enjoyed their craft activities. Happily, 2A was awarded the prize for best decorated classroom.

Most of the year 2’s participated in the Quran Competition. It was so good to see young children succeeding in their recitation with such confidence. May Allah bless them for their faithfulness!
This term our projects have ranged from making your own smoothie and fairy bread, to making a tree collage for our classroom and working in the garden. These hands-on activities are big favorites with the students.

During week 6, some interesting visitors came to see us! Sitting in a circle, we were fascinated to be able to hold the animals and pass them around with their trainer supervising. The animals that came were a lizard, a snake, a young crocodile, two possums, a scorpion, a rabbit, and a tawny frogmouth bird. Everyone’s favourite was the soft rabbit. The children were thrilled to be in such close contact with these animals, with the protective guidance of the trainer.

Wishing everyone happy holidays and looking forward to seeing you next term, Inshallah!

Year 3

Assalamu Alaikum,

Term 2 started exquisitely with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. The year 3 class did an incredible job decorating the classroom for Ramadan and Eid with their creative and inspiring artwork. Mashallah they did so well that 3B won the award for one of the best decorated classrooms. YAY!

During week 2, the year 3s sat the NAPLAN test for the first time, covering Literacy and Numeracy. It was incredible to see how determined students were to succeed. Well done to the year 3s for successfully completing it! In science, students have been learning about the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. They were very excited to learn that some substances, such as water, can change states depending on temperature. Furthermore, for HASS we have been learning about Australia’s first people; the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. Students had a lot of fun researching about the many aspects of Aboriginal culture.

In P.E, students have been learning to play football and we have been lucky enough to have Auskick coaching this term, which the year 3s have been thoroughly enjoying. Among other things, students also participated in the yearly Quran competition. It was incredible to see our students recite the Quran in such a beautiful and heartfelt manner Mashallah! May Allah reward them for their participation and all their efforts.

Wishing you all a safe and happy term break and looking forward to seeing you again in term 3 Inshallah!

Year 4

Year 4A

Assalamu Alaikum Parents/Guardians

It has been a wonderful blessing this term towards a smoother transition into academics Alhamdulillah. Year 4A has shown consistent dedication and a renewed interest to write more in Term 2. I look forward to their consistent effort next term and pray that they benefit from it always.

In grammar this term, our goals were to enhance sentence structure and punctuation. Students focused on differentiating between common nouns and proper nouns and how to accurately use them during writing. A lot of emphasis has been placed on using pronouns and adjectives to add details in writing. We are exploring a lot of adjectives and synonyms using a thesaurus which Year 4A students have identified as part of their learning goals in class. Spelling has also been integrated into these learning goals where students follow rules and patterns to remember how to spell a word and understand its meaning to use in writing.

Using the writing program Seven Steps, students have gained a lot of confidence in enhancing their ideas and vocabulary used to add details required in narrative writing. Students are enjoying the one minute challenges involved in brainstorming ideas for structuring their narrative texts in relation to Sizzling Starts, Tightening Tension using Five Sense + 1 and Exciting Endings.

Various reading strategies have been explored which are now currently utilised in comprehension activities using various texts as well as the book in use for drama. Students are monitoring their progress in inference using Lexile according to which they are borrowing books from the library as well.

Year 4A thoroughly enjoyed Math this term and worked very hard to do various levels of challenging questions related to rounding numbers, subtraction using regrouping (column method), multiplication as well as some aspects of division. Various hands-on activities have been used to make it engaging to increase their speed and accuracy in calculations. Word problems will be our ongoing focus to establish an understanding of the math language to solve more complex problems.

For Design and Technology this term, students had to investigate, plan, design and evaluate to create a robot using recycled materials and meeting a design brief. All students thoroughly enjoyed hands on learning and designing their robot.

Over the term, in Science lessons, students learnt about ‘Natural and Processed’ materials. Students were able to conduct a number of experiments and record their observations and results. They explored various properties of materials and their common uses.

Students investigated the continents of Africa and South America in HASS. They have developed the skills and have been able to name a number of countries, cities and understand what topographical features are on a map. Students have developed a deeper understanding of Africa’s natural environment through the inquiry task conducted this term.

In Arts, students were introduced to the basic concepts in drama involving setting, dialogues, cast, stage directions, acts and scenes. Using these elements, students had to work in teams to demonstrate their skills in freeze framing and thought tracking. We are currently integrating these skills in conjunction with comprehension reading strategies to enact scenes from the book ‘Lost and Found Cat’.

This term in Health, students continued to develop their knowledge and understanding about the importance of respectful relationships. Students learnt about honesty and integrity, appreciating differences and empathy. In one particular activity, students worked in pairs to interview each other by asking questions in order to find out the similarities and differences between them. Through this activity, they learnt to appreciate each other’s differences and uniqueness and learnt that they share similar interests as well. Students also worked in pairs to produce a PowerPoint presentation that represented the topic of honesty and integrity, appreciating differences or empathy. Students needed to answer a set of questions and include pictures to represent the topic. It was fantastic to see the collaboration and teamwork between the students.

For Physical Education this term, students participate in AFL football and had a coach come in to teach them a variety of skills such as bouncing, handballing and kicking. Students thoroughly enjoyed practising and perfecting these skills with their peers and many of the students demonstrated a lot of confidence with their techniques.

Year 4A also won the Ramadan Art Decoration Competition for their fantastic artwork completed as part of their learning which was one of the highlights of our term. They are also enjoying the AFL sessions learning various techniques to further gain skills and modify them with practice.

Rumana Mazhar

Year 4B

Assalamu Alaikum

Term 2 has certainly been eventful for our class.  Our focus throughout the term has been to continue implementing the 4 AIC Core Values daily. As a class, we have also been learning to work together on integrity and empathy.

The students were fortunate enough to participate in AFL football coaching this term which they thoroughly enjoyed.

In English we are continuing to develop the students reading comprehension skills using a variety of texts.  It is imperative that all students read at home to improve their reading skills.  We appreciate parent support in this regard.

The students are also developing their writing of narratives using the Seven Steps to Writing Success.  With continued effort and practice, the students are improving their writing skills.

In Mathematics we have focused on Number throughout the semester.  We will continue with it next term as understanding all facets of Number is critical to all mathematical learning.

For Design and Technology, students had to investigate, plan, create and design a robot using recycled materials. All students thoroughly enjoyed the hands on learning and designing of their robot.

Over the term students learnt about ‘Natural and Processed’ materials in Science. They were able to conduct a number of experiments and record their observations and results.

In HASS, students investigated the continents of Africa and South America. They were able to name a number of countries, cities and have an understanding of what topographical features are on a map. They have developed a deeper understanding of Africa’s natural environment through the inquiry task conducted this term.

Please continue to monitor your child’s homework as this forms part of student revision and reinforcement. For your child to be successful, set a homework schedule that fits in with each week’s activities.

We encourage all parents to ensure they are regularly checking Class Dojo as this forms part of our parent communication. Also, please make sure that if your child is absent, you contact the office or send a message to inform us of your child’s absence. If your child is absent for more than one day, a medical certificate is required.

We hope you all have a restful break and the students come back ready for the exciting learning we have planned in Term 3.

Carolina De Leonardis & Jay Allocca

Year 5

English

Mayoral Make A Books were completed and taken to the Charles Sturt Library. We are very hopeful that we have a winner in our class. Students used 7 Steps to complete their narrative stories and the finished products were impressive.

Drama

Freeze frames are used in drama to make a visual picture, like a photograph, to show characters in a scene or series of scenes. Students in 5A have thoroughly enjoyed pretending they are in different scenarios, pretending to be different characters. In small groups they have created a series of freeze frames to tell a fairy tale.

Science

This term in science, students have investigated what a solid, liquid and gas are. Students can name the properties for each matter and how different states of matter can be changed. All students achieved pleasing results in the Science Quiz!

HASS

During HASS students explored different Australian landmarks, locations of landmarks and the States of Australia. All students actively participated in class discussions and research activities.

Our New Bookshelf

Our New Bookshelf is now in use. Our students requested more books for their class library, but we did not have any more shelf space, so they were given the challenge of making one. With two old wooden chairs and wood from a broken shelf, they came up with a very creative and practical solution.

AFL Crows Cup

AFLW Crows Cup was brought to our school along with one of the 3 times premiership players from the Adelaide Crows woman’s football team. Our students were given the opportunity to hold the cup and ask questions. I do think we will have future AFLW players in our class.

Imaginations Stations

Imagination Stations occurs on the last lesson Friday if all work tasks have been completed. Our students work on problem solving challenges such as Marble runs, Lego challenges and Stop motion animations. This gives out students a chance to explore their creativity as well as using their problem-solving skills. This has certainly been a great incentive for completing all school and homework tasks.

PAT Tests

PAT tests have now been completed. Our strengths have certainly been in Spelling and Grammar so far. I look forward to seeing students build upon their knowledge in all areas and comparing these results to the results in term 4.

We wish you all a happy and safe holiday and don’t forget to start to plan your book week costume for next term. We will also be running a book stall which will give further practical experience for our maths. We would like to say well done to the efforts our students and their families have put in this term. It has certainly been a team effort.

Rosalie Haese and Tanya Khelwaty

Primary Numeracy

Assalamu Alaikum

The annual NAPLAN assessment occurred on Tuesday, 10 May 2022 and concluded on 20 May 2022. An estimated 1.2 million students undertook the test in more than 9,500 schools and campuses across Australia.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 at AIC participated in the online testing. NAPLAN evaluates skills such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but simply provides teachers with additional information about their progress.

Receiving the NAPLAN 2022 data will provide valuable information to support our teaching and learning of the students at the College.

We have begun preparations for Numeracy Week next term. We hope to provide students the opportunity to celebrate their mathematical learning through engaging and interactive activities.

Primary Literacy

This term our students have participated in PAT testing in the following areas for Literacy: Spelling, Grammar, Reading and Punctuations. Early analysis of data has indicated that our students’ strengths are in Spelling and Grammar.

We have begun preparations for Literacy Week Next term. We will be holding our annual Book fair run by our year 5 students this year and have begun to plan our Book Week Parade. This is always a very exciting event for our students and teachers, and we all look forward to seeing our favourite book characters on this day.

Our Library as received 50 new Lexile Books at the start of this term as well as new levelled readers for our younger students. Our Book Fair proceeds will also go towards buying more books for the library.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is well underway, and it has been great to see students now at the Hall of Fame level as they have been participating since, they have started school.

The Charles Sturt Mayoral Make A Book entries have been completed and delivered to the library. We are looking forward to seeing how students have gone after they have been working very hard to implement all the skills, they have learned with Seven Steps writing strategies.

Primary Sports

In Term Two we have had some free clinics, continuing programs and have begun planning for the coming years events. This term we have achieved the following.

  1. Successfully secured $3000 in Sporting Schools Grants
  2. Run AFL Coaching for years 3-6 through the sporting schools program
  3. Run free Female Basketball Coaching sessions for years R-6
  4. Begun our second Auskick Program
  5. Had a visit from AFLW Player Sarah Allan and the Premiership Cup
  6. Run and won our first Islamic Inter-school Competition
  7. Registered for the first ever Boys Westies Cup AFL Competition
  8. Begun preparations for the Boys and Girls Bachar Houli Cups
  9. Begun preparations for Term Three Sports Day
  10. Had a student win a statewide design competition for a multicultural football

AFL Sporting School Funding and SANFL Support

Once again we were lucky enough to secure funding for specialist coaches. The upper primary students used the funding to fine tune their AFL skills in the lead up to AFL competition season. The SANFL has seen a large increase in multicultural participation in the sport and through the Bachar Houli Foundation two Islamic staff have been employed to develop football in Adelaide, specifically in Islamic youth. This puts us in wonderful position. Thanks to Br. Amer El Hosni and Sr. Layan Saadeh for their support. They have been a regular prescience at our school this year and helped us navigate the AFL landscape while understanding and integrating our culture.

Auskick

This term we put on our second Auskick after a successful program last year. We had a keen group from across R-6 who participated enthusiastically every week. We also had our first ever external enrolment which was a lovely surprise for AIC. A young boy who lives nearby chose to visit us every week to join our program. Our students were friendly and welcoming and it was an unexpectedly nice way to reach out to the local community. We were also given the incredible opportunity to play on Adelaide Oval at half time of an AFL game. I will share news about this event in the next newsletter.

Female Basketball Clinics

As part of Basketball South Australia’s Female Participation Strategy, our school was invited to receive a free basketball clinic. The Female Participation Strategy is a collaborative approach to engage females in the sport of Basketball by increasing confidence, community spirit and leadership skills. Key focus areas of the strategy included diversity, inclusion, remote and rural reach. The coaches we had were from Adelaide Lightening. Over two days every girl in primary was able to engage in the clinic. We are so proud to have been a part of this and hope that it will encourage our students to branch out to clubs and try sports for which epithet have a passion.

AFLW Premiership Cup Tour

In May we were included in the AFLW Premiership Cup Tour. The Crows Womens Team have won three Premierships and this year took the cup on the road. It is exciting for our students to have had two opportunities this year to interact and learn from professional athletes. I heard a saying recently, “you can’t be what you can’t see”. With so many talented students out there imagine what seeing these athletes does for them. I am excited to see where this leads.

Islamic Soccer Cup

In August last year Pinnacle College narrowly beat AIC boys in the race for the Bachar Houli Cup. The very next day AIC was keen to have another go and compete again. From this grew an idea for an Islamic Inter-school Group that join together to compete in sporting contests throughout the year. The idea gained momentum when I met with Pinnacle PE Coordinator Michael Triantifilikis. We mapped out a few competition ideas and finally got one off the ground after a year of setbacks. The Islamic Soccer Cup was for year 6 boys. Each school had two teams and played three games each. AIC and Pinnacle played off in the final and our boys came away with the win. A great result that has left everyone wanting more.

Bachar Houli Cup Football Design Competition

This year the Bachar Houli Foundation ran a competition to design a football for the Bachar Houli Cup. It was open to three schools who were all invited to submit their top three entries. These were sent to Melbourne for judging and a design by AIC year six student Noor Zrieka was selected as the winner. Her design is currently being manufactured and will be used at the male and female Bachar Houli Cups in August.

This term I have also started visiting some of our students out at clubs playing club sport to continue their passions and build on their skills. I have been impressed with the number of students out playing at club level and using their excess energy in a positive way. Next term we have more competitions coming and after school soccer. Sports Day is set for September 15th. Looking forward to an exciting term three.

Ms. Katy Javor

Year 7

Assalamu alaikum

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

InshaAllah this finds you in the best of health and eman!
The Year 7s have been working diligently this term in both HASS and Islamic.

In HASS, they have been exploring the vitality of water to our everyday life and how it impacts the world we live in. Students have been delving in deep and have been analysing how it shapes our lives beyond agriculture and drinking. We have discussed how Zam Zam water shaped Arabia from a geographical point of view.

In Islamic Studies, we have been looking at the biography of Prophet Muhammad SAW and how the people in his early life impacted his path of life. Students have worked meticulously on their presentations on one of the Prophet SAW family members. I have been pleased with the outcome of their work. Well done, Year 7s!

If you any questions, concerns or just want to have a chat about your child’s progress feel free to contact me via email [email protected].

Kindest regards,

Miss Atakan
English, HASS and Islamic Teacher

High School English

Year 8 English

This term, the Year 8 students have been focusing on the concept of perspective while studying the novel “Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.” John Boyne’s novel effectively visualises the concept for the students and educates them of the division of Nazi Germany and the atrocities of concentration camps like Auschwitz. Students composed a newspaper front page aimed at educating a peer about the Holocaust before writing journal entries for a minor character’s perspective. The term ended with the students’ comparing similarities and differences between the book and the movie while explaining the reasoning behind them.

Ms Rabia Khan, Mr Antonios Pagonis and Ms Penelope Dounas

Year 9 English

This term, the Year 9 students have engaged with intertextuality from different points of view. After learning the concepts of parody, allusion and appropriation, the students were tested on their understanding of the concepts by researching, identifying and explaining intertextuality in couch gags from the popular TV show, “The Simpsons.” The students proceeded to tackle intertextuality through creating their own parodies in groups, changing lines from popular music to their own themes, including lyrics with an Islamic theme. Fairy tales are our oldest example of intertextuality and the students were given the opportunity to explore fairy-tale tropes along with the original and adapted versions of these ancient tales. The term ended with the students learning about film techniques and investigating how intertextuality is present in Shrek and the Star Wars franchise.

Ms Emine Atakan, Mr Antonios Pagonis and Ms Penelope Dounas

Year 10 English

This term students have been learning about the life of William Shakespeare, looking at Sonnets and reading the play Othello. Students have been analysing sonnets of their choice, looking at the various parts of sonnets, and depicting the themes of Othello in a creative visual form following their representation of the theme with a writer’s statement.

11 Essential English

Due to new implemented structure to the school year, students have had to adjust to completing all tasks by the end of Term 3 rather than Term 4. It has been pleasing to see students working diligently to create newsletter articles for their chosen context and working on analyzing posters. Students are looking at the audience, purpose, and language of posters.

Quran & Azaan Competition

Assalamu Alaikom Wa Rahmatu Allahe Wa Barakatuh,

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

On the 23rd and 24th of May, the Australian Islamic College held its Annual Quran and Azan Competition at the Adelaide campus. Alhamdulillah the Quran competition was a great success with 73 participants ranging from Reception to Year 12. The main aim of the Quran competition was to encourage students to recite The Holy Quran and to provide them with the opportunity to compete with each other with the best recitation of the words of Allah.

The judges for the competition were Imam Mohamed Elsayed of AIC Adelaide, Imam Riyad El-Rifaie of Marion Masjid, Dr. Ahmed Mostafa the Director of Hifz Program, and Ustadh. Marie Salem. We were privileged to have the Imams address the students about the greatness of The Holy Quran and advise them that those people who live their lives in accordance with the Quran are the people of Jannah.

The participants and parents were also very fortunate to have a breathtaking Quran recitation from Imam Riyad and Dr. Ahmed who read with his beautiful voice.

The college would like to congratulate all the boys and girls who won in this year’s Quran competition. However, in the sight of Allah SWT, everybody is a winner for being part of this competition!

I am also delighted to inform you that the top six winners will each get a scholarship from a very generous and good friend and brother, Dr. Waleed. May Allah SWT rewards him abundantly.

May Allah accept from all of us, keep us all steadfast and united and keep away from us any form of division and disunity.

May Allah bring the hearts closer and protect all Muslims from any evil and harm.

AMEEN AMEEN AMEEN.

Wassalam

HASS

Year 9 HASS

In Year 9 Geography, the focus at the beginning of the term was biomes. Students were introduced to a range of biomes and where they can be found in the natural world. They were shown how each biome plays a crucial role for life on the planet and that if one falls, stress is put on the surrounding biomes. Students selected a biome and created an infographic to present the unique characteristics it possesses and the threats it is facing. In the second half of the term, the classes focused on food security around the world. They were made aware that not everyone eats like we do in Australia and that if they did, the world would run out of food rapidly. The Year 9 students reviewed popular crops around the world and the reason why they are produced en-masse.

Ms Ann Vincent and Mr Antonios Pagonis

Year 10 HASS

In Year 10 Geography, students were introduced to the Earth’s biosphere with a focus on the delicate balance that our lives rely on. They were introduced to the concept of Earth Overshoot Day and the real-life situations around the world that are threatening our planet’s biodiversity and long-term future, along with the environmental management decisions that can be made to put a stop to the destruction. As the senior-school semester ticked over, the subject became Civics and Citizenship and the students were introduced to Australia’s system of Government and separation of power, the term ended with students comparing aspects of our Country’s political system to that of another country in the Asian region.

VET

As the new appointed VET Coordinator for 2022 I would like to take this opportunity to clarify the role of Vet. VET stands for Vocation Educational Training. AIC offers VET courses to students in Years 11 & 12. VET courses are offered by a variety of registered training organisations (RTOs) and provide students with the opportunity to develop industry specific skills while still at school. Depending on the level of the course, Stage 1 & 2 SACE credits are achieved by the completion of these courses.
Students can develop skills in trades or industries that interest them and work towards their SACE at the same time. An approved, completed Certificate III (or higher) qualifications may count towards an ATAR. In some cases, completion of a VET Certificate III may serve as a Course Admission Requirement for entry to a related higher level TAFE course.

Currently, Year 11 & 12 students can undertake courses at the beginning of the year. For these courses, days, venues, and prices are wide and varied and there are too many to detail. Please contact me (details below) for more information about any industry that interests you.

Currently, Year 10 students have completed expressions of interest forms for Try-A-Trade courses offered at Western Technical College in Term 3. Students are encouraged to meet with Ms. Hanifi if they are interested in pursuing a vocational pathway in 2023. Enrolments for VET courses will begin in Term 3. Enrolments for semester 2, 2022 is underway.

Students have also been working on their research of various drugs and preparing a report of oral presentation to demonstrate their learning. Students are preparing for mid-year exams which are scheduled for week 8, inshaallah.

Year 11 Spiritualties, Religion & Meaning

AIC is one of the few schools which is implementing the new curriculum of Spiritualities, Religion and Meaning in 2022. Our Year 11 students are one of the first students who are studying this new curriculum. Students have completed their first assessment type of Reflective Analysis, where they reflected on the importance of Surah Alaq throughout history and to society.

Currently students are working on the Connections tasks focusing on practices which create a sense of connection for worshipers. Senior students presented to Middle school students topics such as tarawih, Eid and Taqwah. Senior students collated questionnaires to gain feedback on their presentation to examine the types of connections and experiences their audiences had in relation to the topics presented. Many thanks to the Middle school teachers for welcoming the senior students in their classrooms to present to their students and complete their tasks.

Year 10 Spiritualities, Religion & Meaning

Students have been learning the Sunan of the morning and evening and have completed their examination for semester 1. Currently students are completing their first investigation where they developed focusing questions to undertake research using primary and secondary sources to investigate spiritual and or religious perspectives on the issue, and present their informed opinions in their preferred mode.

Careers

Assalamu Alaikum Dear Parents and Caregivers

We aim to provide consistent and quality career guidance to our students form Years 7-12. This is accomplished through a variety of activities organised throughout the year for the students. While most of these activities focus on Year 12 cohort as they are the level closest to finalising a choice in careers and a university degree; however, efforts are made to orientate students from year 7-10 as well. As a result, we have a group of very well-informed students who not only know about key factors to consider when deciding upon a career choice, but also know about the kind of study and work different careers involve.

Some of the activities undertaken by the students in this regard during term 2 are as follows:

River Journey Sessions with Flinders University

The students from Years 8, 10 and 11 engaged in River Journey sessions with Flinders University. These sessions aim to encourage students to explore and map their education and career futures using the metaphor of a winding river, recognising that life journeys do not always progress in a straight line. Students learnt to consider the benefit of higher education in achieving their career objectives and life goals.

Year 11 Career Sessions with Flinders University representative:

During week 1 of term 2, students had the opportunity of consulting individually with a Flinders University representative. Working from a student profile and personal questioning and information session, students worked through what courses and careers they are most interested in. The feedback from the students validated the importance of this session which students found extremely useful as they got personalised information and feedback. A replication of this session with a representative from Adelaide University is due to take place in week 9 of this term.

Year 10 and 11 Career Sessions with Adelaide University Representative:

Year 10 and 11 are of key importance in guiding students towards better understanding and refinement of career choices. For this reason, a session was organised specifically for these Year levels with a representative from Adelaide University. This was a workshop style activity wherein students worked from their personal strengths and interests towards learning about the careers most likely to be in demand in the next 5-10 years. Based on up-to-date statistics and information about upcoming careers, this session opened students’ minds towards the importance of market demand in job choice as well as the significance of staying abreast with the latest developments in the job market.

Flash Mentoring Sessions for Years 7-11

These sessions were stage 2 of the River Journey programme being run in collaboration with Flinders University. We had about 12 student ambassadors from different fields of study at university come to our school and engage with the students from Years 7-12. This was a terrific experience for the students as they learnt about different disciplines in small groups, asked questions about the rigour and requirement of courses, pathways and job opportunities. The swapping of university ambassadors in different groups meant that all students heard from a variety of disciplines including Medicine, Health, Nutrition, Engineering, Law, Exercise Physiology, Political Science, Environment Sustainability, Psychology. It was a treat to watch our inquisitive students engrossed in conversation and enquiring actively about the courses.

Apart from these, we have been keeping students up-to-date with any further career related information that comes our way. The students have also been visiting me regularly to ask questions and find out about university applications and SATAC guidelines. I hope these endeavours pave the path to brilliant careers for our students.

If you have any questions or concerns, or wish to seek guidance about any career related questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
